Lesson 5: Tips & Tricks for Subject Matter Experts

The Subject Matter Expert role is a fantastic one for making progress in the world of live chat. Here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve even greater success.

Ask for Help When You Need It

Because you are now considered to be an expert, you may feel pressured to know everything. But there will always be issues you haven’t encountered before or new subjects you are not familiar with.

If you find yourself stumped, don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one expects you to be a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. The whole point of having a team is so that you can all work together...the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

When you are out of your depth, reach out for help immediately. See it as an opportunity to learn and enhance your expertise. The longer you are in the SME role, the less often this will happen. It's all about being prepared to learn and improve.

Be Prepared to Admit You Are Wrong

We all make mistakes sometimes, and this is sure to happen to you at work, too. When it does, don’t panic!

Most companies are sympathetic and understand that everyone drops the ball occasionally. So do whatever is necessary to put things right.

Most importantly, you need to learn from the experience. Figure out what went wrong and how you can do better next time. Then, as long as you are constantly improving, everything should work out fine.

Say ‘Yes’ to Everything

As a Subject Matter Expert, you may find that you are asked to get involved in all kinds of projects. You should always be prepared to say ‘yes’ and jump in to help.

This is the best way to learn and level up your skills. It’s also a great way to ensure that senior management notices you. Team members who are up for a challenge are always in demand, which can do wonders for your career.

So that’s the role of Subject Matter Expert. It’s an essential role in the live chat world and an excellent opportunity to move up to the Intermediate level. If this sounds like a good fit for you, give it your best shot!
