Lesson 4: Working from Home Successfully

As a work-from-home professional, you are part of a team, yet you may never actually meet your teammates face to face. Because of this, part of the art of being a remote team member is learning to work from home alone successfully.

This involves learning a new set of skills and adapting to a new way of life. The first week or two may seem strange, but you will soon get used to working this way. Here are some tips to help you make it work.

Take Responsibility

When you are working from home, no one is looking over your shoulder, checking that you are doing things the right way. That means you must be responsible enough to get things done without immediate supervision.

Just because you don't have to commute doesn't mean you throw your alarm clock in the trash. You still need to log on for work at the correct time and effectively manage your time during the day. Again, it's up to you to ensure you use your time well without being distracted by personal matters.

Take Proper Breaks

Time flies, and it's easy to go for hours without taking a break. But everyone needs time away from the computer to recharge and energize. So be sure to schedule regular breaks during your workday.

Be sure to get up and stretch your legs. If you can get outside for some fresh air, so much the better. A few minutes' walk around the block will clear out the cobwebs and ensure you are on top form when you get back to work.

Avoid Overworking

It's easy to work past the end of your official working day, especially if things are busy. But remember that you need time to yourself at the end of the day. You also need time to spend with your family, friends, and loved ones.

So be realistic about the number of hours you work each day. Nobody wants you to burn out from stress, so you need to maintain a good work/life balance to stay happy and healthy.

Focus on Nutrition

When you work from home, there's no staff canteen at your disposal. You are responsible for taking care of your own nutritional needs—and these need to be taken seriously.

First of all, make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself alert and energized. Get yourself a healthy lunch and keep snacks and junk food to a minimum.

Upgrade Your Internet

As a remote live chat agent, you will be relying heavily on your Internet connection to make a living. So it's worth making a small investment to get the best connection you can.

Talk to your Internet provider to see if you can pay for an improved service while also checking what competing providers can offer. If possible, have a second connection available through an alternative provider. That way, if one goes down, you will still be able to get online and make money.

Working as part of a remote team is a new way of working, but also a fun and enjoyable one. If you take the time to become a top team member, you are sure to succeed as a great live chat agent.
