Lesson 3: Your First Live Chats

So finally, the big day has arrived! You’ve done all your training and learned how everything works. Now you are ready to start chatting to visitors—and get paid good money to do it!

This is an exciting moment in your new vocation, so it’s important to handle things correctly. Let’s look at ways you can do that.

First-Chat Nerves

It’s perfectly normal to be a little nervous when you first start chatting live to customers. After all, this is a big step forward. Even confident people may be a little daunted when initiating that first-ever chat.

Here are some tips to help you calm your nerves:

Make Good Use of the Knowledge Base

The company's knowledge base is your best friend! Whenever a customer’s question stumps you, you can simply turn to the system to find the answers you need.

So it’s worth spending time getting to know the knowledge base well. Take some time to browse through it, and learn how to use the search function to best advantage. All of this will help you out when you need answers in a hurry during a call.

Ask for Help

The good news is that as a live chat agent, you are never alone. You are part of a team, and your colleagues will always be on hand to support you. Everyone in the team will remember what it’s like to be a rookie at the job, so they will be only too happy to help.

Most companies will have a system in place for you to get help when you need it. If you can’t find the answers you need in the knowledge base, you have a system to follow to get a solution. The first step may be to contact your supervisor or a subject matter expert.

In most cases, this is all that’s necessary. You should be able to get back to the visitor with the correct answer very quickly. However, if it's a complex query, you may be asked to hand the visitor over to a more experienced chat agent.

No matter how challenging the query is, rest assured that your colleagues will have your back, and everything will be resolved without difficulty.

Learn and Improve

The key thing to remember is that no one expects you to be superhuman. As long as you do your best and call for help when needed, you will find that everything works in your favor.

We all make mistakes, so don’t panic if you slip and do something wrong. Instead, be ready to admit your mistake and ask for advice on how to fix it. Then learn from the experience, and resolve to improve and do better next time.

If you follow that simple strategy, you will improve at a fantastic pace and soon become an indispensable team member.
