In every team, some people make a positive contribution, while others slow the team down. Of course, you want to be one of the contributors. This is much easier than you might think, and it's worth making the extra effort to get this right. 

There are many things you can do to make a positive contribution. Here are some suggestions for standing out from the crowd as a future team leader. 

You can't do your job well unless you know what you are expected to achieve. So make sure you are familiar with your description and the duties assigned to you. Be careful not to step on other people's turf.

Be ready to share your ideas and support your teammates. At the same time, though, you don't want to be the one who monopolizes discussions or gets too pushy. There is a middle way that will work to your advantage. 

You should always have respect for your teammates. You don't want to be the one who shares gossip, grips about colleagues. Instead, remain discrete and helpful at all times. Aim to be the person that others can trust to come to with their problems and questions. 

No matter how hard you try to get along, some conflicts may arise. Unfortunately, there will always be one team member who is quick to cause trouble. 

When this happens, deal with it calmly, rationally, and as soon as is practical. The longer you leave a problem to fester, the more it will escalate. So talk to your colleague and try to resolve the issue between yourselves. If that doesn't work out, ask your supervisor to assist.
